vehement

UK /ˈviː.ə.mənt/ · US /ˈviː.hə.mənt/ adjective

  1. adjective Showing strong feelings; passionate; forceful or intense. “The man made a vehement display of contempt.”

Synonyms

full-throated swith fierce tearing violent trigger-happy

Etymology

Borrowed from Middle French vehement (modern French véhément; compare Italian veemente, Portuguese veemente, Spanish vehemente); or from Latin vehemēns (“vehement; very eager; ardent, furious, impetuous; emphatic”), probably from vē- (“lacking, too little”) + mēns (“mind; intellect; judgment, reasoning”).

Webster’s 1913

  1. adjective Acting with great force; furious; violent; impetuous; forcible; mighty; as, vehement wind; a vehement torrent; a vehement fire or heat.
  2. adjective Very ardent; very eager or urgent; very fervent; passionate; as, a vehement affection or passion. "Vehement instigation." Shak.

Etymology [L. vehemens, the first part of which is perhaps akin to vehere to carry, and the second mens mind: cf. F. véhément. Cf. Vehicle, and Mental.]
