“इमं,i·maṃ भिक्खवे,bhik·kha·ve रत्तिंrat·tiṃ अञ्ञतराañ·ña·ta·rā देवताde·va·tā अभिक्कन्तायa·bhik·kan·tā·ya रत्तियाrat·ti·yā अभिक्कन्तवण्णाa·bhik·kan·ta·vaṇ·ṇā केवलकप्पंke·va·la·kap·paṃ जेतवनंje·ta·va·naṃ ओभासेत्वाo·bhā·set·vā येनाहंye·nā·haṃ तेनुपसङ्कमि;te·nu·pa·saṅ·ka·mi उपसङ्कमित्वाu·pa·saṅ·ka·mit·vā मंmaṃ अभिवादेत्वाa·bhi·vā·det·vā एकमन्तंe·ka·man·taṃ अट्ठासि।aṭ·ṭhā·si एकमन्तंe·ka·man·taṃ ठिताṭhi·tā खो,kho भिक्खवे,bhik·kha·ve साsā देवताde·va·tā मंmaṃ एतदवोच:e·ta·da·vo·ca

“Imaṁ, bhikkhave, rattiṁ aññatarā devatā abhikkantāya rattiyā abhikkantavaṇṇā kevalakappaṁ jetavanaṁ obhāsetvā yenāhaṁ tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā maṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ aṭṭhāsi. Ekamantaṁ ṭhitā kho, bhikkhave, sā devatā maṁ etadavoca:

“Mendicants, tonight, a glorious deity, lighting up the entire Jeta’s Grove, came to me, bowed, stood to one side, and said to me:

‘सत्तिमे,sat·ti·me भन्ते,bhan·te धम्माdham·mā भिक्खुनोbhik·khu·no अपरिहानायa·pa·ri·hā·nā·ya संवत्तन्ति।saṃ·vat·tan·ti

‘sattime, bhante, dhammā bhikkhuno aparihānāya saṁvattanti.

‘Sir, these seven things don’t lead to the decline of a mendicant.

सत्थुगारवता,sat·thu·gā·ra·va·tā धम्मगारवता,dham·ma·gā·ra·va·tā सङ्घगारवता,saṅ·gha·gā·ra·va·tā सिक्खागारवता,sik·khā·gā·ra·va·tā समाधिगारवता,sa·mā·dhi·gā·ra·va·tā हिरिगारवता,hi·ri·gā·ra·va·tā ओत्तप्पगारवता।ot·tap·pa·gā·ra·va·tā

Satthugāravatā, dhammagāravatā, saṅghagāravatā, sikkhāgāravatā, samādhigāravatā, hirigāravatā, ottappagāravatā.

Respect for the Teacher, for the teaching, for the Saṅgha, for the training, for immersion, for conscience, and for prudence.

इमेi·me खो,kho भन्ते,bhan·te सत्तsat·ta धम्माdham·mā भिक्खुनोbhik·khu·no अपरिहानायa·pa·ri·hā·nā·ya संवत्तन्ती’ति।saṃ·vat·tan·tī

Ime kho, bhante, satta dhammā bhikkhuno aparihānāya saṁvattantī’ti.

These seven things don’t lead to the decline of a mendicant.’

इदमवोच,i·da·ma·vo·ca भिक्खवे,bhik·kha·ve साsā देवता।de·va·tā

Idamavoca, bhikkhave, sā devatā.

That is what that deity said.

इदंi·daṃ वत्वाvat·vā मंmaṃ अभिवादेत्वाa·bhi·vā·det·vā पदक्खिणंpa·dak·khi·ṇaṃ कत्वाkat·vā तत्थेवन्तरधायीति।tat·the·van·ta·ra·dhā·yī·ti

Idaṁ vatvā maṁ abhivādetvā padakkhiṇaṁ katvā tatthevantaradhāyīti.

Then he bowed and respectfully circled me, keeping me on his right side, before vanishing right there.

सत्थुगरुsat·thu·ga·ru धम्मगरु,dham·ma·ga·ru

Satthugaru dhammagaru,

One respectful of the Teacher and the teaching,

सङ्घेsaṅ·ghe चca तिब्बगारवो;tib·ba·gā·ra·vo

saṅghe ca tibbagāravo;

keenly respecting the Saṅgha;

समाधिगरुsa·mā·dhi·ga·ru आतापी,ā·tā·pī

Samādhigaru ātāpī,

respecting immersion, being energetic,

सिक्खायsik·khā·ya तिब्बगारवो।tib·ba·gā·ra·vo

sikkhāya tibbagāravo.

and keenly respecting the training;

हिरिओत्तप्पसम्पन्नो,hi·ri·ot·tap·pa·sam·pan·no

Hiriottappasampanno,

endowed with conscience and prudence,

सप्पतिस्सोsap·pa·tis·so सगारवो;sa·gā·ra·vo

sappatisso sagāravo;

reverential and respectful—

अभब्बोa·bhab·bo परिहानाय,pa·ri·hā·nā·ya

Abhabbo parihānāya,

it is impossible for them to decline;

निब्बानस्सेवnib·bā·nas·se·va सन्तिके”ति।san·ti·ke

nibbānasseva santike”ti.

they have drawn near to extinguishment.”
