Tena samayena buddho bhagavā rājagahe viharati veḷuvane kalandakanivāpe.

At one time the Buddha was staying at Rājagaha in the Bamboo Grove, the squirrel sanctuary.

Tena kho pana samayena bhikkhuniyo tattheva rājagahe vassaṁ vasanti, tattha hemantaṁ, tattha gimhaṁ.

At that time the nuns were staying right there at Rājagaha for the rainy season, the winter, and the summer.

  9. 9

    Manussā ujjhāyanti khiyyanti vipācenti—

    People complained and criticized them,

  10. 10

    “आहुन्दरिकाā·hun·da·ri·kā भिक्खुनीनंbhik·khu·nī·naṃ दिसाdi·sā अन्धकारा,an·dha·kā·rā नna इमासंi·mā·saṃ दिसाdi·sā पक्खायन्ती”ति।pak·khā·yan·tī

“āhundarikā bhikkhunīnaṁ disā andhakārā, na imāsaṁ disā pakkhāyantī”ti.

“The nuns are leaving the districts in darkness and obscurity. They don’t brighten them up by their presence.”

  11. 11

Assosuṁ kho bhikkhuniyo tesaṁ manussānaṁ ujjhāyantānaṁ khiyyantānaṁ vipācentānaṁ.

The nuns heard the complaints of those people.

  12. 12

Atha kho tā bhikkhuniyo bhikkhūnaṁ etamatthaṁ ārocesuṁ.

    They then told the monks,

  13. 13

    भिक्खूbhik·khū भगवतोbha·ga·va·to एतमत्थंe·ta·mat·thaṃ आरोचेसुं।ā·ro·ce·suṃ

    Bhikkhū bhagavato etamatthaṁ ārocesuṁ.

who in turn told the Buddha.

  14. 14

    अथa·tha खोkho भगवाbha·ga·vā एतस्मिंe·tas·miṃ निदानेni·dā·ne एतस्मिंe·tas·miṃ पकरणेpa·ka·ra·ṇe धम्मिंdham·miṃ कथंka·thaṃ कत्वाkat·vā भिक्खूbhik·khū आमन्तेसि—ā·man·te·si

Atha kho bhagavā etasmiṁ nidāne etasmiṁ pakaraṇe dhammiṁ kathaṁ katvā bhikkhū āmantesi—

Soon afterwards the Buddha gave a teaching and addressed the monks:

  15. 15

    “तेनte·na हि,hi भिक्खवे,bhik·kha·ve भिक्खुनीनंbhik·khu·nī·naṃ सिक्खापदंsik·khā·pa·daṃ पञ्ञपेस्सामिpañ·ña·pes·sā·mi दसda·sa अत्थवसेat·tha·va·se पटिच्च—pa·ṭic·ca

“tena hi, bhikkhave, bhikkhunīnaṁ sikkhāpadaṁ paññapessāmi dasa atthavase paṭicca—

“Well then, monks, I will lay down a training rule for the nuns for the following ten reasons:

  16. 16

    सङ्घसुट्ठुतायsaṅ·gha·suṭ·ṭhu·tā·ya …पे…pe

    saṅghasuṭṭhutāya …pe…

for the well-being of the Sangha …

  17. 17

    सद्धम्मट्ठितियाsad·dham·maṭ·ṭhi·ti·yā विनयानुग्गहाय।vi·na·yā·nug·ga·hā·ya

    saddhammaṭṭhitiyā vinayānuggahāya.

for the longevity of the true Teaching, and for supporting the training.

  18. 18

Evañca pana, bhikkhave, bhikkhuniyo imaṁ sikkhāpadaṁ uddisantu—

And, monks, the nuns should recite this training rule like this:

  19. 19
  20. 20

    “याyā पनpa·na भिक्खुनीbhik·khu·nī वस्संवुट्ठाvas·saṃ·vuṭ·ṭhā चारिकंcā·ri·kaṃ नna पक्कमेय्यpak·ka·mey·ya अन्तमसोan·ta·ma·so छप्पञ्चयोजनानिपि,chap·pañ·ca·yo·ja·nā·ni·pi पाचित्तियन्”ति।pā·cit·ti·yan

“Yā pana bhikkhunī vassaṁvuṭṭhā cārikaṁ na pakkameyya antamaso chappañcayojanānipi, pācittiyan”ti.

‘If a nun who has completed the rainy-season residence does not go wandering at least 65 to 80 kilometers, she commits an offense entailing confession.’”

  21. 21
  22. 22

    याyā पनातिpa·nā·ti

purimaṁ vā temāsaṁ pacchimaṁ vā temāsaṁ vuṭṭhā.

who has completed the first three or the last three months of the rainy-season residence.

  28. 28

    “चारिकंcā·ri·kaṃ नna पक्कमिस्सामिpak·ka·mis·sā·mi अन्तमसोan·ta·ma·so छप्पञ्चयोजनानिपी”तिchap·pañ·ca·yo·ja·nā·ni·pī धुरंdhu·raṃ निक्खित्तमत्तेnik·khit·ta·mat·te आपत्तिā·pat·ti पाचित्तियस्स।pā·cit·ti·yas·sa

“Cārikaṁ na pakkamissāmi antamaso chappañcayojanānipī”ti dhuraṁ nikkhittamatte āpatti pācittiyassa.

If she thinks, “I won’t go wandering, not even 65 to 80 kilometers,” then by the mere fact of abandoning her duty, she commits an offense entailing confession.
