  4. 4

    अथa·tha खोkho सम्बहुलाsam·ba·hu·lā भिक्खूbhik·khū येनye·na भगवाbha·ga·vā तेनुपसङ्कमिंसु;te·nu·pa·saṅ·ka·miṃ·su उपसङ्कमित्वाu·pa·saṅ·ka·mit·vā भगवन्तंbha·ga·van·taṃ अभिवादेत्वाa·bhi·vā·det·vā एकमन्तंe·ka·man·taṃ निसीदिंसु।ni·sī·diṃ·su एकमन्तंe·ka·man·taṃ निसिन्नाni·sin·nā खोkho तेte भिक्खूbhik·khū भगवन्तंbha·ga·van·taṃ एतदवोचुं:e·ta·da·vo·cuṃ

Then several mendicants went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him:

  5. 5

    “कतमाka·ta·mā नुnu खो,kho भन्ते,bhan·te वेदना,ve·da·nā कतमोka·ta·mo वेदनासमुदयो,ve·da·nā·sa·mu·da·yo कतमोka·ta·mo वेदनानिरोधो,ve·da·nā·ni·ro·dho कतमाka·ta·mā वेदनानिरोधगामिनीve·da·nā·ni·ro·dha·gā·mi·nī पटिपदा?pa·ṭi·pa·dā

“katamā nu kho, bhante, vedanā, katamo vedanāsamudayo, katamo vedanānirodho, katamā vedanānirodhagāminī paṭipadā?

“Sir, what is feeling? What’s the origin of feeling? What’s the cessation of feeling? What’s the practice that leads to the cessation of feeling?

  6. 6

    कोko वेदनायve·da·nā·ya अस्सादो,as·sā·do कोko आदीनवो,ā·dī·na·vo किंkiṃ निस्सरणन्”ति?nis·sa·ra·ṇan

Ko vedanāya assādo, ko ādīnavo, kiṁ nissaraṇan”ti?

And what is feeling’s gratification, drawback, and escape?”

  7. 7

    “तिस्सोtis·so इमा,i·mā भिक्खवे,bhik·kha·ve वेदना—ve·da·nā

    “Tisso imā, bhikkhave, vedanā—

“Mendicants, there are these three feelings:

  8. 8

    सुखाsu·khā वेदना,ve·da·nā दुक्खाduk·khā वेदना,ve·da·nā अदुक्खमसुखाa·duk·kha·ma·su·khā वेदना—ve·da·nā

sukhā vedanā, dukkhā vedanā, adukkhamasukhā vedanā—

    pleasant, painful, and neutral.

  9. 9

    इमाi·mā वुच्चन्ति,vuc·can·ti भिक्खवे,bhik·kha·ve वेदना।ve·da·nā

    imā vuccanti, bhikkhave, vedanā.

    These are called feelings.

  10. 10

    फस्ससमुदयाphas·sa·sa·mu·da·yā वेदनासमुदयो;ve·da·nā·sa·mu·da·yo

    Phassasamudayā vedanāsamudayo;

    Feeling originates from contact.

  11. 11

    फस्सनिरोधाphas·sa·ni·ro·dhā वेदनानिरोधो।ve·da·nā·ni·ro·dho

    phassanirodhā vedanānirodho.

    When contact ceases, feeling ceases.

  12. 12

    अयमेवa·ya·me·va अरियोa·ri·yo अट्ठङ्गिकोaṭ·ṭhaṅ·gi·ko मग्गोmag·go वेदनानिरोधगामिनीve·da·nā·ni·ro·dha·gā·mi·nī पटिपदा,pa·ṭi·pa·dā सेय्यथिदं—sey·ya·thi·daṃ

Ayameva ariyo aṭṭhaṅgiko maggo vedanānirodhagāminī paṭipadā, seyyathidaṁ—

The practice that leads to the cessation of feelings is simply this noble eightfold path, that is:

  13. 13
  14. 14

    यंyaṃ वेदनंve·da·naṃ पटिच्चpa·ṭic·ca उप्पज्जतिup·paj·ja·ti सुखंsu·khaṃ सोमनस्सं,so·ma·nas·saṃ अयंa·yaṃ वेदनायve·da·nā·ya अस्सादो।as·sā·do

Yaṁ vedanaṁ paṭicca uppajjati sukhaṁ somanassaṁ, ayaṁ vedanāya assādo.

The pleasure and happiness that arise from feeling: this is its gratification.

  15. 15

    यंyaṃ वेदनाve·da·nā अनिच्चाa·nic·cā दुक्खाduk·khā विपरिणामधम्मा,vi·pa·ri·ṇā·ma·dham·mā अयंa·yaṃ वेदनायve·da·nā·ya आदीनवो।ā·dī·na·vo

Yaṁ vedanā aniccā dukkhā vipariṇāmadhammā, ayaṁ vedanāya ādīnavo.

That feeling is impermanent, suffering, and perishable: this is its drawback.

  16. 16

    योyo वेदनायve·da·nā·ya छन्दरागविनयोchan·da·rā·ga·vi·na·yo छन्दरागप्पहानं,chan·da·rā·gap·pa·hā·naṃ इदंi·daṃ वेदनायve·da·nā·ya निस्सरणं।nis·sa·ra·ṇaṃ

Yo vedanāya chandarāgavinayo chandarāgappahānaṁ, idaṁ vedanāya nissaraṇaṁ.

Removing and giving up desire and greed for feeling: this is its escape.

  17. 17

khīṇāsavassa bhikkhuno rāgo niruddho hoti, doso niruddho hoti, moho niruddho hoti.

For a mendicant who has ended the defilements, greed, hate, and delusion have ceased.

For a mendicant who has ended the defilements, greed, hate, and delusion have stilled.
