Mūgapakkhoti nāmena,

Mūgapakkha was my name,

तेमियोतिte·mi·yo·ti वदन्तिva·dan·ti मं।maṃ

temiyoti vadanti maṁ.

they called me Temiya.

सोळसित्थिसहस्सानं,so·ḷa·sit·thi·sa·has·sā·naṃ

None of the sixteen thousand court women

Ahorattānaṁ accayena,

After many days and nights

I was born, the only one.

किच्छाkic·chā लद्धंlad·dhaṃ पियंpi·yaṃ पुत्तं,put·taṃ

Kicchā laddhaṁ piyaṁ puttaṁ,

To my father I was a dear son born with difficulty,

अभिजातंa·bhi·jā·taṃ जुतिन्धरं;ju·tin·dha·raṃ

abhijātaṁ jutindharaṁ;

a light-bringer of impeccable lineage.

सेतच्छत्तंse·tac·chat·taṃ धारयित्वान,dhā·ra·yit·vā·na

Setacchattaṁ dhārayitvāna,

Holding a white parasol over my bed,

सयनेsa·ya·ne पोसेतिpo·se·ti मंmaṃ पिता।pi·tā

sayane poseti maṁ pitā.

my father provided for me.

निद्दायमानोnid·dā·ya·mā·no सयनवरे,sa·ya·na·va·re

Niddāyamāno sayanavare,

Sleeping on the fine bed,

पबुज्झित्वानहंpa·buj·jhit·vā·na·haṃ तदा;ta·dā

Pabujjhitvānahaṁ tadā;

then having awoken,

अद्दसंad·da·saṃ पण्डरंpaṇ·ḍa·raṃ छत्तं,chat·taṃ

Addasaṁ paṇḍaraṁ chattaṁ,

I saw the pale umbrella,

येनाहंye·nā·haṃ निरयंni·ra·yaṃ गतो।ga·to

Yenāhaṁ nirayaṁ gato.

by which I had gone to hell.
21

सहsa·ha दिट्ठस्सdiṭ·ṭhas·sa मेme छत्तं,chat·taṃ

Saha diṭṭhassa me chattaṁ,

At the sight of the umbrella
22

तासोtā·so उप्पज्जिup·paj·ji भेरवो;bhe·ra·vo

tāso uppajji bheravo;

a terrible dread arose in me.

विनिच्छयंvi·nic·cha·yaṃ समापन्नो,sa·mā·pan·no

Vinicchayaṁ samāpanno,

I reached the decision,

‘कथाहंka·thā·haṃ इमंi·maṃ मुञ्चिस्सं’।muñ·cis·saṃ

‘kathāhaṁ imaṁ muñcissaṁ’.

‘How can I be free of this?’
25

पुब्बसालोहिताpub·ba·sā·lo·hi·tā मय्हं,may·haṃ

Pubbasālohitā mayhaṁ,

A former blood-relation of mine,
26

देवताde·va·tā अत्थकामिनी;at·tha·kā·mi·nī

devatā atthakāminī;

a goddess wishing to help,
27

साsā मंmaṃ दिस्वानdis·vā·na दुक्खितं,duk·khi·taṃ

Sā maṁ disvāna dukkhitaṁ,

saw my suffering
28

तीसुtī·su ठानेसुṭhā·ne·su योजयि।yo·ja·yi

tīsu ṭhānesu yojayi.

and enjoined me to three states.

‘माmā पण्डिच्चयंpaṇ·ḍic·ca·yaṃ विभावय,vi·bhā·va·ya

‘Mā paṇḍiccayaṁ vibhāvaya,

‘Don’t show intelligence,
30

बालमतोbā·la·ma·to भवbha·va सब्बपाणिनं;sab·ba·pā·ṇi·naṃ

Bālamato bhava sabbapāṇinaṁ;

be as a fool to all creatures,
31

सब्बोsab·bo तंtaṃ जनोja·no ओचिनायतु,o·ci·nā·ya·tu

Sabbo taṁ jano ocināyatu,

let all folk scorn you,
32

एवंe·vaṃ तवta·va अत्थोat·tho भविस्सति’।bha·vis·sa·ti

Evaṁ tava attho bhavissati’.

thus you will achieve your goal.’

एवंe·vaṃ वुत्तायहंvut·tā·ya·haṃ तस्सा,tas·sā

Evaṁ vuttāyahaṁ tassā,

When she had spoken,
34

इदंi·daṃ वचनमब्रविं;va·ca·na·mab·ra·viṃ

idaṁ vacanamabraviṁ;

I said the following.
35

‘करोमिka·ro·mi तेte तंtaṃ वचनं,va·ca·naṃ

‘Karomi te taṁ vacanaṁ,

‘I shall do your bidding,
36

यंyaṃ त्वंtvaṃ भणसिbha·ṇa·si देवते;de·va·te

yaṁ tvaṁ bhaṇasi devate;

just as you say, goddess.
37

अत्थकामासिat·tha·kā·mā·si मेme अम्म,am·ma

Atthakāmāsi me amma,

You want what’s best for me, mom,
38

हितकामासिhi·ta·kā·mā·si देवते’।de·va·te

hitakāmāsi devate’.

you desire my welfare, goddess.’
39

तस्साहंtas·sā·haṃ वचनंva·ca·naṃ सुत्वा,sut·vā

Tassāhaṁ vacanaṁ sutvā,

After hearing her words,
40

सागरेवsā·ga·re·va थलंtha·laṃ लभिं;la·bhiṃ

sāgareva thalaṁ labhiṁ;

I was like one lost at sea reaching the shore.
41

हट्ठोhaṭ·ṭho संविग्गमानसो,saṃ·vig·ga·mā·na·so

Haṭṭho saṁviggamānaso,

I was thrilled, my mind elated,
42

तयोta·yo अङ्गेaṅ·ge अधिट्ठहिं।a·dhiṭ·ṭha·hiṃ

tayo aṅge adhiṭṭhahiṁ.

and I resolved on three factors.
43

मूगोmū·go अहोसिंa·ho·siṃ बधिरो,ba·dhi·ro

Mūgo ahosiṁ badhiro,

I became deaf, and dumb,
44

पक्खोpak·kho गतिविवज्जितो;ga·ti·vi·vaj·ji·to

pakkho gativivajjito;

and crippled, unable to walk.
45

एतेe·te अङ्गेaṅ·ge अधिट्ठाय,a·dhiṭ·ṭhā·ya

Ete aṅge adhiṭṭhāya,

Resolving on these factors,

वस्सानिvas·sā·ni सोळसंso·ḷa·saṃ वसिं।va·siṃ

vassāni soḷasaṁ vasiṁ.

I lived for sixteen years.
47

ततोta·to मेme हत्थपादेhat·tha·pā·de च,ca

Tato me hatthapāde ca,

Then they rubbed my hands and feet,

जिव्हंjiv·haṃ सोतञ्चso·tañ·ca मद्दिय;mad·di·ya

jivhaṁ sotañca maddiya;

my tongue and ears as well,

अनूनतंa·nū·na·taṃ मेme पस्सित्वा,pas·sit·vā

Anūnataṁ me passitvā,

and seeing no defect in me,

‘काळकण्णी’तिkā·ḷa·kaṇ·ṇī निन्दिसुं।nin·di·suṃ

‘kāḷakaṇṇī’ti nindisuṁ.

denounced me as ‘black-ear’.

ततोta·to जानपदाjā·na·pa·dā सब्बे,sab·be

Tato jānapadā sabbe,

Due to that, the entire country,

सेनापतिपुरोहिता;se·nā·pa·ti·pu·ro·hi·tā

senāpatipurohitā;

including the generals and priests,

सब्बेsab·be एकमनाe·ka·ma·nā हुत्वा,hut·vā

Sabbe ekamanā hutvā,

with one mind

छड्डनंchaḍ·ḍa·naṃ अनुमोदिसुं।a·nu·mo·di·suṃ

chaḍḍanaṁ anumodisuṁ.

cheered as I was discarded.

सोहंso·haṃ तेसंte·saṃ मतिंma·tiṃ सुत्वा,sut·vā

Sohaṁ tesaṁ matiṁ sutvā,

When I heard of their decision

हट्ठोhaṭ·ṭho संविग्गमानसो;saṃ·vig·ga·mā·na·so

haṭṭho saṁviggamānaso;

I was thrilled, my mind elated,

‘यस्सत्थायyas·sat·thā·ya तपोचिण्णो,ta·po·ciṇ·ṇo

‘Yassatthāya tapociṇṇo,

‘The goal for which I lived fervently

सोso मेme अत्थोat·tho समिज्झथ’।sa·mij·jha·tha

so me attho samijjhatha’.

I have achieved.’

न्हापेत्वाnhā·pet·vā अनुलिम्पित्वा,a·nu·lim·pit·vā

Nhāpetvā anulimpitvā,

Bathed and oiled,

वेठेत्वाve·ṭhet·vā राजवेठनं;rā·ja·ve·ṭha·naṃ

veṭhetvā rājaveṭhanaṁ;

with my turban wrapped,

छत्तेनchat·te·na अभिसिञ्चित्वा,a·bhi·siñ·cit·vā

Chattena abhisiñcitvā,

anointed, they held the umbrella

कारेसुंkā·re·suṃ पुरंpu·raṃ पदक्खिणं।pa·dak·khi·ṇaṃ

kāresuṁ puraṁ padakkhiṇaṁ.

as they paraded me around the city.

सत्ताहंsat·tā·haṃ धारयित्वान,dhā·ra·yit·vā·na

Sattāhaṁ dhārayitvāna,

After the seventh day holding the umbrella,

उग्गतेug·ga·te रविमण्डले;ra·vi·maṇ·ḍa·le

uggate ravimaṇḍale;

when the sun’s orb had risen,

रथेनra·the·na मंmaṃ नीहरित्वा,nī·ha·rit·vā

Rathena maṁ nīharitvā,

I was taken out by chariot,

सारथीsā·ra·thī वनमुपागमि।va·na·mu·pā·ga·mi

sārathī vanamupāgami.

until the charioteer came to a wood.

एकोकासेe·ko·kā·se रथंra·thaṃ कत्वा,kat·vā

Ekokāse rathaṁ katvā,

Leaving the chariot in the open,

सज्जस्संsaj·jas·saṃ हत्थमुच्चितो;hat·tha·muc·ci·to

sajjassaṁ hatthamuccito;

the bridled horse released from his hand,

सारथीsā·ra·thī खणतीkha·ṇa·tī कासुं,kā·suṃ

Sārathī khaṇatī kāsuṁ,

the charioteer dug a pit

निखातुंni·khā·tuṃ पथवियाpa·tha·vi·yā ममं।ma·maṃ

nikhātuṁ pathaviyā mamaṁ.

to bury me in the ground.

अधिट्ठितमधिट्ठानं,a·dhiṭ·ṭhi·ta·ma·dhiṭ·ṭhā·naṃ

Adhiṭṭhitamadhiṭṭhānaṁ,

I was afraid for the many different

तज्जेन्तोtaj·jen·to विविधकारणा;vi·vi·dha·kā·ra·ṇā

tajjento vividhakāraṇā;

resolves that I had undertaken,

नna भिन्दिंbhin·diṃ तमधिट्ठानं,ta·ma·dhiṭ·ṭhā·naṃ

Na bhindiṁ tamadhiṭṭhānaṁ,

so I did not break that resolve,

बोधियायेवbo·dhi·yā·ye·va कारणा।kā·ra·ṇā

bodhiyāyeva kāraṇā.

because it was solely for awakening.
75

मातापिताmā·tā·pi·tā नna मेme देस्सा,des·sā

Mātāpitā na me dessā,

I had no dislike of my parents,

अत्ताat·tā मेme नna चca देस्सियो;des·si·yo

attā me na ca dessiyo;

nor did I dislike myself.

सब्बञ्ञुतंsab·bañ·ñu·taṃ पियंpi·yaṃ मय्हं,may·haṃ

Sabbaññutaṁ piyaṁ mayhaṁ,

But because omniscience is precious to me,

तस्माtas·mā वतमधिट्ठहिं।va·ta·ma·dhiṭ·ṭha·hiṃ

tasmā vatamadhiṭṭhahiṁ.

that is why I resolved on my vow.

एतेe·te अङ्गेaṅ·ge अधिट्ठाय,a·dhiṭ·ṭhā·ya

Ete aṅge adhiṭṭhāya,

Having resolved the three factors,

वस्सानिvas·sā·ni सोळसंso·ḷa·saṃ वसिं;va·siṃ

Vassāni soḷasaṁ vasiṁ;

I lived for sixteen years.

अधिट्ठानेनa·dhiṭ·ṭhā·ne·na मेme समोsa·mo नत्थि,nat·thi

Adhiṭṭhānena me samo natthi,

There is no one to equal my resolve:

एसाe·sā मेme अधिट्ठानपारमी”ति।a·dhiṭ·ṭhā·na·pā·ra·mī

Esā me adhiṭṭhānapāramī”ti.

this is my perfection of resolve.”
