Gāmaṇḍalā upāgantvā,

Village louts came up

Rūpaṁ dassentinappakaṁ.

and mocked me in all sorts of ways.

अपरेa·pa·re गन्धमालञ्च,gan·dha·mā·lañ·ca

Apare gandhamālañca,

Others brought me

भोजनंbho·ja·naṃ विविधंvi·vi·dhaṃ बहुं;ba·huṃ

bhojanaṁ vividhaṁ bahuṁ;

incense and flowers,

उपायनानूपनेन्ति,u·pā·ya·nā·nū·pa·nen·ti

Upāyanānūpanenti,

and many kinds of cooked food,

हट्ठाhaṭ·ṭhā संविग्गमानसा।saṃ·vig·ga·mā·na·sā

haṭṭhā saṁviggamānasā.

all thrilled, their minds elated.

येye मेme दुक्खंduk·khaṃ उपहरन्ति,u·pa·ha·ran·ti

Ye me dukkhaṁ upaharanti,

Those who brought me pain,
14

येye चca देन्तिden·ti सुखंsu·khaṃ मम;ma·ma

ye ca denti sukhaṁ mama;

and those who gave me happiness,
15

सब्बेसंsab·be·saṃ समकोsa·ma·ko होमि,ho·mi

Sabbesaṁ samako homi,

were all the same to me.

दयाda·yā कोपोko·po नna विज्जति।vij·ja·ti

dayā kopo na vijjati.

I felt no favor or anger.

सुखदुक्खेsu·kha·duk·khe तुलाभूतो,tu·lā·bhū·to

Sukhadukkhe tulābhūto,

I became balanced toward pleasure and pain,

यसेसुya·se·su अयसेसुa·ya·se·su च;ca

Yasesu ayasesu ca;

fame and disgrace.

सब्बत्थsab·bat·tha समकोsa·ma·ko होमि,ho·mi

Sabbattha samako homi,

I was equal in every case:

एसाe·sā मेme उपेक्खापारमी”ति।u·pek·khā·pā·ra·mī

Esā me upekkhāpāramī”ti.

this is my perfection of equanimity.”

I realized supreme awakening.

दत्वाdat·vā दातब्बकंdā·tab·ba·kaṃ दानं,dā·naṃ

Datvā dātabbakaṁ dānaṁ,

I gave what could be given,

सीलंsī·laṃ पूरेत्वाpū·ret·vā असेसतो;a·se·sa·to

sīlaṁ pūretvā asesato;

and fulfilled ethics without reserve.

नेक्खम्मेnek·kham·me पारमिंpā·ra·miṃ गन्त्वा,gan·tvā

Nekkhamme pāramiṁ gantvā,

Having won the perfection of renunciation,

पत्तोpat·to सम्बोधिमुत्तमं।sam·bo·dhi·mut·ta·maṃ

patto sambodhimuttamaṁ.

I realized supreme awakening.

पण्डितेpaṇ·ḍi·te परिपुच्छित्वा,pa·ri·puc·chit·vā

Paṇḍite paripucchitvā,

I inquired of the astute,

वीरियंvī·ri·yaṃ कत्वानkat·vā·na मुत्तमं;mut·ta·maṃ

vīriyaṁ katvāna muttamaṁ;

and put forth highest effort,

खन्तियाkhan·ti·yā पारमिंpā·ra·miṃ गन्त्वा,gan·tvā

Khantiyā pāramiṁ gantvā,

having won the perfection of acceptance,

पत्तोpat·to सम्बोधिमुत्तमं।sam·bo·dhi·mut·ta·maṃ

patto sambodhimuttamaṁ.

I realized supreme awakening.

कत्वाkat·vā दळ्हमधिट्ठानं,da·ḷha·ma·dhiṭ·ṭhā·naṃ

Katvā daḷhamadhiṭṭhānaṁ,

Having made a firm resolve,

सच्चवाचानुरक्खिय;sac·ca·vā·cā·nu·rak·khi·ya

saccavācānurakkhiya;

and guarded truthful speech,

मेत्तायmet·tā·ya पारमिंpā·ra·miṃ गन्त्वा,gan·tvā

Mettāya pāramiṁ gantvā,

having won the perfection of love,

पत्तोpat·to सम्बोधिमुत्तमं।sam·bo·dhi·mut·ta·maṃ

patto sambodhimuttamaṁ.

I realized supreme awakening.

लाभालाभेlā·bhā·lā·bhe यसायसे,ya·sā·ya·se

Lābhālābhe yasāyase,

In gain and loss, fame and disgrace,

सम्माननावमानने;sam·mā·na·nā·va·mā·na·ne

sammānanāvamānane;

respect and contempt,

सब्बत्थsab·bat·tha समकोsa·ma·ko हुत्वा,hut·vā

Sabbattha samako hutvā,

having become equal in every case,

पत्तोpat·to सम्बोधिमुत्तमं।sam·bo·dhi·mut·ta·maṃ

patto sambodhimuttamaṁ.

I realized supreme awakening.

कोसज्जंko·saj·jaṃ भयतोbha·ya·to दिस्वा,dis·vā

Kosajjaṁ bhayato disvā,

Seeing laziness as fearful,

वीरियारम्भञ्चvī·ri·yā·ram·bhañ·ca खेमतो;khe·ma·to

vīriyārambhañca khemato;

and energy as a sanctuary,
56

आरद्धवीरियाā·rad·dha·vī·ri·yā होथ,ho·tha

Āraddhavīriyā hotha,

rouse up energy:
57

एसाe·sā बुद्धानुसासनी।bud·dhā·nu·sā·sa·nī

esā buddhānusāsanī.

this is the Buddhas’ instruction!

विवादंvi·vā·daṃ भयतोbha·ya·to दिस्वा,dis·vā

Vivādaṁ bhayato disvā,

Seeing dispute as fearful,
59

अविवादञ्चa·vi·vā·dañ·ca खेमतो;khe·ma·to

avivādañca khemato;

and harmony as a sanctuary,
60

समग्गाsa·mag·gā सखिलाsa·khi·lā होथ,ho·tha

Samaggā sakhilā hotha,

be harmonious and courteous:

एसाe·sā बुद्धानुसासनी।bud·dhā·nu·sā·sa·nī

esā buddhānusāsanī.

this is the Buddhas’ instruction!

पमादंpa·mā·daṃ भयतोbha·ya·to दिस्वा,dis·vā

Pamādaṁ bhayato disvā,

Seeing negligence as fearful,

अप्पमादञ्चap·pa·mā·dañ·ca खेमतो;khe·ma·to

appamādañca khemato;

and diligence as a sanctuary,
64

भावेथट्ठङ्गिकंbhā·ve·thaṭ·ṭhaṅ·gi·kaṃ मग्गं,mag·gaṃ

Bhāvethaṭṭhaṅgikaṁ maggaṁ,

develop the eightfold path:

एसाe·sā बुद्धानुसासनी।bud·dhā·nu·sā·sa·nī

esā buddhānusāsanī.

this is the Buddhas’ instruction!

इत्थंit·thaṃ सुदंsu·daṃ भगवाbha·ga·vā अत्तनोat·ta·no पुब्बचरियंpub·ba·ca·ri·yaṃ सम्भावयमानोsam·bhā·va·ya·mā·no बुद्धापदानियंbud·dhā·pa·dā·ni·yaṃ नामnā·ma धम्मपरियायंdham·ma·pa·ri·yā·yaṃ अभासित्थाति।a·bhā·sit·thā·ti

Itthaṁ sudaṁ bhagavā attano pubbacariyaṁ sambhāvayamāno buddhāpadāniyaṁ nāma dhammapariyāyaṁ abhāsitthāti.

That is how the Buddha, illustrating his own conduct in past lives, spoke the exposition of the teaching named the “Legends of the Buddha”.
